treatment of ear issues and Vata-based damage to the cranial nerves.
The head is the most important organ in our body, as all our body functions are controlled by the brain and sensory organs. In Ayurveda, human body is considered as an inverted tree and head is compared to root of tree; therefore, we can irrigate or nourish the roots (head) for the healthy functioning of the trunk and branches (body). Shira means head and vasthy means to ‘retain’. Shirovasthy is an effective Ayurveda treatment in which medicated oil is retained on the scalp in a fitted cap, for a stipulated time.
The procedure starts with fixing a shirovasthy cap (a chef cap) over the head of the patient who sits in a comfortable seat. Our Ayurveda therapists will apply black gram paste to the junction of the cap to avoid leakage of oil. The prescribed medicated oil is then filled inside the cap. The temperature of the oil will be maintained at a constant temperature throughout the procedure. This procedure is for up to 45 – 60 minutes or as directed by physician repeated up to a maximum of 7 sessions. After the treatment duration, the oil and cap are removed, and we dry the hair using towel and apply a herbal powder on vertex to avoid kapha imbalances.
During Shirovasthy procedure, the patient should eat only very light and easily digestible food. One can take a warm shower after the treatment, though, in some conditions head bath is contraindicated. Back to Roots Ayurveda clinic in Abu Dhabi offers an authentic Shirovasthy treatment under the supervision of our expert Ayurvedic physicians.
