IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is a common gastrointestinal disease causes the irritation of bowel. In this condition, there is no damage in stomach and intestinal lining, only have functional alteration. Patient complaints that just before they going outside or suddenly after intake of food feels sudden urge of defecation. The exact cause of IBS is unclear. There is a change in gut-brain barrier plays an important role in IBS (incorrect communication between digestive tract function and brain command). Abnormal muscle contraction in intestine is the other important cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, that causes abdominal discomfort and alteration in bowel movements. Change in gut microbiome (change in healthy bacteria present in gut) and some bacterial infection also triggers IBS. Emotional stress and food sensitivity or allergy also causes IBS.
Stomach discomfort related with defecation, loose, hard, or mixed stool, excessive gas formation, feeling of incomplete defecation.

It is correlated with the malfunctioning of absorption, digestion etc. Excessive use of unhealthy and improper food habits like fast food, excessive intake of food, suppression of natural urges, over intake of spicy, bitter, and astringent foods, dry foods like lentils and dals, keeping awake at nights, emotions like fear, grief, over thinking, over exertion – these causes alteration in digestive fire and causes the disease Grahani. Along with medication dietary modification is very important in IBS. Suggest patient to follow low FODMAP (Fermentable Oligosaccharides Disaccharides Monosaccharides and Polyol) diet, which includes, easy digestible carbohydrates like orange, tomato, cucumber, carrot, etc in cooked form. Avoid Gluten content diet (barley, oats, wheat) and dairy products. Potatoes, raw bananas, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, cashew and peanuts, millets, uncooked salads, sprouts are also trouble causing food items in some IBS cases.
