Ela Kizhi Therapy

Ela Kizhi -Therapy

An effective Ayurveda treatment for joint pains and aches

About the Therapies

Ela kizhi or Patra Pinda Sweda is an ancient Ayurvedic therapy that uses herbs, especially medicinal leaves, to address varied ailments.

Typically administered following an Abhyangam (oil massage), this treatment is done after carefully selecting leaves suited to the individual’s constitution, ailment and condition. Each leaf targets a specific Doshas. For instance, some leaves pacify aggravated Vata, while others serve as Pitta or Kapha-balance agents.  The chosen leaves are heated in herbal oil, bundled into a cloth, forming a poultice / Potli, akin to a compress bag.

This Ayurvedic treatment harnesses the potency of leaves such as Ricinus communis (Eranda), Calotropis procera (Arka), and Vitex Negundo (Nirgundi), all renowned for their anti-Vata properties. Complementary ingredients like lemon, coconut scrapings, rock salt, and turmeric are added, alongside oils such as Karpooradi Tailam and Sahacharadi Tailam, chosen as per the patient’s individual condition.

Procedure:

The patient reclines on the Pathi (Ayurveda treatment table). Abhyangam is carried out with the prescribed oil. Then, the heated poultice (Kizhi) is used to tap and massage on the body. This induces sudation (sweating), which helps to ease pains and aches.
