According to Ayurveda, all elements possess healing properties which may be used as a medicine. For example, there is no single Ayurveda medicine which is useful in all patients of a migraine headache. Because, as per Ayurveda a person’s Prakruty (body type), Vikruty (imbalance), Dooshya (site of pathology) etc varies from another person. It is also important to note that health & disease is dynamic in nature and they transform according to the climatic, geographical changes. Vata Pitta imbalance in a patient can cause vertigo while, Pitta Vata imbalance might cause a gastritis. Vata imbalance in muscle tissue causes a fibromyalgia and that in a bone tissue causes osteoporosis. This proves that we need multiple herbs and recipes for each disease. Indian Ayurveda pharmacopeia have over a 600-plant based or animal based or mineral based drugs and Ayurveda formulary of India has over 1000 classical formulations. The right medicine should match for the Prakruty, Vikruty, Dooshya, digestion, age, stage of the disease, geography, climate etc. Then only an Ayurveda medicine can result a perfect cure.

There may be different forms of Ayurveda preparations one might see in a typical Ayurveda prescription:

1. Kashaya or Kwatha (Syrups): Water soluble active ingredients of raw herbs are extracted in syrup form in such preparations; they are bitter in taste. Recently some of these preparations are available in tablet forms.
2. Churna (herbal powders): The whole herbs or a part of it is dried and powdered in this preparation. These are prescribed for both internal use or external application as mixed with water or honey or milk or other liquid medicines.
3. Lehya (Herbal jams): These confections made with the base of sugar or jaggery or honey for internal consumption
4. Ghruta (Herbal ghees): Ghee is used as the base in the medicine preparation process to extract the fat soluable active components from the herbs
5. Thaila (Medicated oils): Medicated oils are prepared mainly with sesame oil base (called thailam) and sometimes, with the base of coconut oil (termed keram), castor oil (termed erenda), bee wax etc. These are used for both external and internal purposes
6. Tablets / pills / capsules: Both generic preparations and proprietary Ayurveda tablets are available in tablet forms
7. Guggulu: One might see the suffix Guggulu in many Ayurveda products; however, they all are not one and same. Guggulu is the sap of a tree – Commiphora mukul – which is used as a binding agent and as an ingredient of such preparations
8. Lepa: Ointment or medicated paste – these are used for external application
9. Arishta or Asava: fermented liquids prepared from herbs
