Ayurvedic Treatment for Neck Pain: Natural Remedies and Therapies

Neck pain is a very common problem in the present times, because of our sedentary lifestyles, improper working postures, emotional stress, Vitamin D deficiency etc. Ayurvedic treatment for neck pain focuses on addressing the root cause of disease by various oil therapies and internal medicines. It is important to identify the cause of the neck pain before planning a treatment strategy.

Causes of neck pain

  1.   Cervical Spondylosis – Otherwise called osteoarthritis of Cervical spine is caused by wear and tear of the intervertebral disc in our neck. Common symptoms are – neck pain, stiffness, restricted neck movement etc. Cervical spondylosis may sometimes associated with:
  2. Cervical Radiculopathy – Herniated disc causing compression in the spinal nerves, that causes radiating pain from neck towards arms which is associated with numbness and weakness on arms or fingers.
  3. Cervical Myelopathy – Spinal cord compression in the neck may lead to Radiculopathy, weakness, loss of balance, paresthesia etc.
  4.   Physical strain – Certain sports activity, gym work out etc. causes neck pain which can be related with muscular sprains or strains.
  5.   Fibromyalgia can also sometimes cause neck and shoulder pain which is often associated with symptoms like headache, chest tightness, trigger spots, pains & aches aggravated with stress, IBS symptoms, morning fatigue, foggy brain etc.
  6.   Injuries & Trauma can also cause conditions like whiplash injuries which is due to the sudden back & forth movement of the neck as in a car accident. Injuries and Traumas can also result in early wear and tear changes in our cervical spine.

Ayurveda explains neck pain under different disease contexts mentioned in the ancient medical books like – Apabahuka, Viswachi, Manya-sthambha, Greeva-graha, Sandhigatha-vata etc.  These are caused by the imbalance of Vata dosha. According to Ayurveda neck pain due to Vata imbalance can also be triggered by  different etiological factors like: untimely eating and keeping awake at nights, excessive consumption of dry, cold, bitter, astringent, spicy foods, mental factors like excessive fear, grief, anger, stress etc. Vata gets aggravated and localized on the cervical spine area and causes neck pain, stiffness, restricted neck movements, muscle strain etc.

Ayurveda treatment for neck pain aims to correct the imbalanced Vata dosha, which inturn reduces the nerve inflammation, strengthens muscle and ligaments, prevents progression of degeneration, and rejuvenates spinal nerves. Ayurvedic treatments like Abhyanga (oil massage with gentle pressure), Kizhi (bundle therapy – a hot herbal compress, prepared by different herbal powders, leaves, lemon etc. dipped in Ayurvedic oils and is massaged over the body), Pizhichil (medicated oil is drizzled over the body in a steady stream from a specific height), Dhanyamla dhara (fermented medicated liquid prepared by different cereals and herbal powders, is poured over the body in a constant warm temperature), Nasya (Nasya is one of the Panchakarma  measure where the medicated oil, decoction, fresh herbal juice, powders etc. is administered through nose), Greeva vasti( holding warm medicated oil in cervical spine in a dam prepared with dough) etc.
