A nourishing Ayurveda massage therapy
Njavara kizhi is an Ayurvedic treatment renowned for alleviating neuro-muscular disorders, joint pains and strengthening soft tissues and the joints. This therapy combines swedana (sudation) and brimhana (nourishing therapy) to provide a holistic relief.
Njavara or Navara, is a special variety of edible rice that matures in just 60 days, holds remarkable medicinal properties and features prominently in various Ayurvedic treatments.
First, the Njavara rice is cooked in cow’s milk or a medicinal decoction such as Sida cordifolia (Bala). Once cooked, the rice is formed into a poultice (bolus or compress bag). This poultice / potli is immersed in warm medicinal decoction or milk and used to massage to the body following abhyanga. At the end of the therapy session, the rice paste is gently wiped out from the body and an oil application is done.
Usually Njavara kizhi is performed as a concluding treatment. As the treatment is done with Rice paste and milk, some patients may experience cold sensation. Back to Roots’ Ayurveda therapist take measures to maintain the body warmth by gentle rubbing; in the winter season, we use room heaters as well.
